About the Mission Community Foundation

The Mission Community Foundation is a non-profit charitable organization, which collects funds from donors and invests these funds, using the income for the benefit of the citizens of the Mission area, in the fields of education, recreation, culture, and the humanities.

The Mission Community Foundation believes in a simple concept we ‘help you to help others’.

The Foundation is comprised of a core group of volunteers who sit on our Board and various Committees.  These individuals contribute their time and expertise to help the Foundation grow and remain viable in the Community.

Our Board of Directors has a combination of elected individuals as well as appointed representatives from the District of Mission, Chamber of Commerce, Mission Public Schools #75, Mission Community Services, and the Fraser Valley Regional District.  This diversity provides us with multiple points of view and helps us remain focused and strong.

We currently have 4 committees and they are:

Bursary & Scholarship Committee:  These individuals are charged with reviewing, interviewing and recommending students for Scholarships and Bursaries.  They dedicate three full days to interviewing the students and then work to match recipients with funds available.  Their recommendations are taken to the Board of Directors for final approval and awards are presented.

Development Committee:  This group of individuals are charged with developing marketing campaigns, website and social media changes, and contacting individuals and organizations to become benefactors.  They meet monthly to discuss ideas and implement changes such as this new website.

Distribution Committee:  This committee is in charge of grant dispersal.  They review the grant applications three times yearly and make recommendations to the Board of Directors based on applicants and funds available.

Investment Committee: This committee meets quarterly to review our portfolio.  The Foundation invests our money based on a pre-determined investment policy that safeguards the funds as much as possible through prudent investing.

We hope to continue supporting the Community for years to come and if you would like to become part of our fantastic organization, please contact our Office Manager at 604.826.5322 and advise her of your desire to join us in helping you help others.

Fund Facts: Skillicorn-Melanchuk Bursaries
Carrie Skillicorn and Ruth Melanchuk were sisters. Carrie started her career in the Military and upon retirement worked as a sales clerk at Eaton’s department store in Abbotsford.

Ruth Melanchuk married young, had two boys and became a homemaker. Both sons were interested in the arts and the youngest was musically inclined.

Carrie was the recipient of Ruth’s estate and contacted her friend Bill Walker to start a fund with the Mission Community Foundation. The Skillicorn-Melanchuk Bursary was created in 2001 to provide bursaries for students pursuing post-secondary education in arts and music.

After her death in 2003, Doreen Phelps, acting as executor of Carrie Skillicorn’s estate, approached the Mission Community Foundation to start a new fund in Carrie’s name. The Carrie Skillicorn Fund was also created as a Bursary for post-secondary education in business.

In February 2019 the Mission Community Foundation received instructions to combine the two bursaries into one. This combined Bursary is available to graduating Mission students pursuing post-secondary training in Music, Arts and Business Administration.

Since 2003 this fund has helped 21 students with a total of $13,500 in scholarships. If you would like to help a student study music, arts or business administration, donate today!
