About the Mission Community Foundation

The Mission Community Foundation is a non-profit charitable organization, which collects funds from donors and invests these funds, using the income for the benefit of the citizens of the Mission area, in the fields of education, recreation, culture, and the humanities.

ABOUT THE MISSION COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

The Mission Community Foundation believes in a simple concept we ‘help you to help others’.

The Foundation is comprised of a core group of volunteers who sit on our Board and various Committees.  These individuals contribute their time and expertise to help the Foundation grow and remain viable in the Community.

Our Board of Directors has a combination of elected individuals as well as appointed representatives from the District of Mission, Chamber of Commerce, Mission Public Schools #75, Mission Community Services, and the Fraser Valley Regional District.  This diversity provides us with multiple points of view and helps us remain focused and strong.

We currently have 4 committees and they are:

Bursary & Scholarship Committee:  These individuals are charged with reviewing, interviewing and recommending students for Scholarships and Bursaries.  They dedicate three full days to interviewing the students and then work to match recipients with funds available.  Their recommendations are taken to the Board of Directors for final approval and awards are presented.

Development Committee:  This group of individuals are charged with developing marketing campaigns, website and social media changes, and contacting individuals and organizations to become benefactors.  They meet monthly to discuss ideas and implement changes such as this new website.

Distribution Committee:  This committee is in charge of grant dispersal.  They review the grant applications three times yearly and make recommendations to the Board of Directors based on applicants and funds available.

Investment Committee: This committee meets quarterly to review our portfolio.  The Foundation invests our money based on a pre-determined investment policy that safeguards the funds as much as possible through prudent investing.

We hope to continue supporting the Community for years to come and if you would like to become part of our fantastic organization, please contact our Office Manager at 604.826.5322 and advise her of your desire to join us in helping you help others.

Fund Facts: Robin and Fran Sorrell FundThis is a dual purpose fund providing scholarships to graduating students, as well as a grants for organizations involved in English literature with emphasis on poetry. Robin grew up in rural Saskatchewan and in 1951 he joined Canadian National Railway and worked on section gangs in the Clair region of Saskatchewan. On holidays, he and Fran would often travel by train to Vancouver passing through the Fraser Valley on the way. They loved the beauty of the area and decided that one day they would settle here. In 1970, Robin transferred to the Port Mann Rail Yards in Surrey and they lived in New Westminster until Robin retired in 1974. It was then that they moved to Mission where they took up residence at the Willows apartments. Staying there until the final move to the Grand Street Lodge. Robin didn’t have a driver’s license or own a car, he was a walker. For all of his and Fran’s needs, he would don his jacket and set off to the stores in Mission. His wit and charm were well known by the people he encountered on Main Street. It was the people he met that he enjoyed the most. He also had a passion for flowers. The roses that adorned the fence in front of the Willows were a delight for everyone who passed by. Above all, Robin enjoyed reading as well as poetry. His poems depict local, national and world events; his love and passion for living; and the many people he met throughout his life. In 1895, one of Robin’s favorite poems, “Twinkling Stars, Blue Skies” was recorded on an album called Memories. In 2002 his writings were recognized with a Golden Poet Award by the World of Poetry Association. Fran passed in November 2002 at the age of 85. In 2006, to promote and encourage Mission area students in the art of poetry, Robin has established the “Robin and Fran Sorrell Poetry Scholarship” through Mission Community Foundation. Since inception this fund has helped 8 students further their educational dreams with $5000 in scholarships. If you would like to help a student study English or Poetry, donate today. The following is a poem written by Robin. A Helping HandGive a hand to the lame, Those who cannot see, They shall find contentment, And grateful, they shall be. An errand for the elderly, Or a letter, for to post, A pensioner needs groceries.Being helpful, is the most. Weed a neighbours garden, And mow another’s lawn, Task, really never end, They just go on, and on.Just a helping hand, To the needy lend, Gives one such comfort, And gains another friend. Don’t put off until tomorrow, The good you can do today, Faint hearts, help no one, But good deeds, really pay. ... See MoreSee Less
