Esther Claire Kathleen Clemo Scholarship Fund – Education
Esther Claire Kathleen Clemo was a well-loved and respected educator. Born in Hong Kong in the 1930’s she travelled the world by the age of 19. Claire immigrated to Canada in 1954 and landed in Mission to live with an aunt. She received her B.Ed in 1964 and taught for more than three decades before retiring. Claire maintained contact with many of her former students, attending graduations and tracking their careers. Her personal archives, which can be found at the Mission District Historical Archives Centre, include hundreds of cards and letters from the students, a testament of respect and admiration for their friend and teacher.
Claire was the recipient of the Queens Silver Jubilee Medal, Rotary Distinguished Service Award, Freeman of the City and a Pathfinder. She never stopped teaching and felt that it was her goal to ‘light the lamp of learning and keep it lit”.
In 2010, Claire started this scholarship to aid students entering the fields of Education and Nursing and the fund has given at least one scholarship annually since inception.
