Blast from the Past: 2005 Mission Central Indigenous Artwork Project

In May 2005, Mission Central Elementary approached Mission Community Foundation requesting a grant of $500 to create original Indigenous artwork for the School.

Tom Patterson, carver in residence, was recruited to teach the students about wood carving. Different wood types, carving tools, making the all-important first cut, and carving techniques were demonstrated. In addition, students were allowed to try their hands at carving. Tom also presented a variety of masks that he had created.

The Whorl is still residing at the entrance of Mission Central.
